Friday, 17 May 2002: Part II New York City, New York

Worried that Mac will be a nervous wreck. After all it’s been eight or nine years since he made a movie. The last time he was a kid. But from the moment he walked onto the set, to play his first scene there was something different about him. He was transformed. He was compelling to watch. He effortlessly seemed to combine charisma with good work; he knew his lines, he hit his mark every time and replicated his gestures from take to take. He mugs around to get the crew to bust up. Have a tingly moment; Mac is the only person who could have played this role and so, after all these years, the fact that he is playing it and choosing to play it as his return to filmmaking feels overwhelming.

After lunch we went out to the park to film young Michael being beaten up and selling candy. We also need some stills for another scene where Michael’s mother is reminiscing about her darling son. One of these is of a molester eyeing up the young kid. Taking this picture, with the kid's mother standing right over our shoulders, made us nervous.

The first day of shooting also was the beginning of our editing process. We decided we wanted to edit while we shot - but it's a little tricky because we are filming in NYC and editing in LA - but to us the set-up is worth it because Jeremy Simmons is editing our film. It's so rare to work with someone who is so in touch with our vision - and has such a great aesthetic.
